Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance

Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance

Purpose

The Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance program allows producers who grow crops under the Vegetable Acreage Loss minimum threshold of a half-acre to combine crops into a basket for small farm coverage.

Eligibility

Participating producers must select all crops under Vegetable Acreage Loss for coverage.

Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance pilot must be selected on the Vegetable Acreage Loss application by March 31.

Combined crops selected for this program must exceed a half-acre minimum acreage.

All crops insurable under Vegetable Acreage Loss (Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Parsnips, Rutabagas, Sweet Corn, Cooking Onions, Other Onions, Leeks, Peppers, Pumpkins, and Winter Squash) are eligible for this program, with the addition of:

  • Beets
  • Garlic
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes

Crops only eligible under this program (i.e. beets, lettuce, garlic) are NOT eligible for Hail Insurance. Crops eligible under Vegetable Acreage Loss are already eligible for Hail Insurance.

If potatoes are selected under the AgriInsurance policy for production insurance, they are NOT eligible for this program.

Vegetables must be adequately irrigated.

Landlords are not eligible.

Coverage

  • The coverage value for each eligible crop under Vegetable Acreage Loss Insurance and Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance is based on cost of production.
  • The basketed coverage value for this pilot program is based on the weighted average coverage value of the crops in the basket.
  • June 30 is the last day to file Seeded Acreage Reports. Due to the later deadlines for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beets and lettuce, producers who grow these crops must file a supplementary Seeded Acreage Report by July 31 to declare the final acreage planted.
  • Crops seeded during the extended coverage direct seeding period will have coverage reduced by 20 per cent.
  • The grade guarantee is ‘Marketable Production.’
  • Coverage ceases when the crop is harvested or when normal harvesting should have occurred.

Cost

The premium cost is shared 50 per cent by the producer, 70 per cent by the Government of Canada, and 80 per cent by the Province of Manitoba.

There is no discount or surcharge applied to premiums for this program.

Claims

Early Indemnity Losses:

  • An early loss indemnity of 25 per cent of coverage applies for destroyed crops until the end of the extended coverage direct seeding deadline for reduced coverage.
  • Early indemnity losses are calculated as: destroyed acres x program coverage x 25%.
  • The affected acreage must be in contiguous blocks of one half-acre or more if the acreage of the small farm eligible crop is at or greater than five (5) acres. If the small farm eligible crop is less than five (5) acres, the affected acreage must be a minimum of one-tenth of an acre.

Acreage Loss Indemnity:

  • Acreage loss indemnities are calculated as: (destroyed acres – deductible) x program coverage.
  • Destroyed acres must be a minimum of one-tenth of an acre. The deductible for this program is 10 per cent of the total insured acreage of the affected small farm eligible vegetable crops.
  • A 15 per cent salvage threshold applies to Small Farm Acreage Loss Insurance.

MASC must be notified by the insured of losses within three days of the loss occurring.

In all cases, the crop must be inspected by MASC prior to being destroyed.
